Photoshop for Photographers: Beyond the Basics

with either Photoshop CS3, or CS4 installed on it*.

This two-day class takes up where  Photoshop for Photographers: The Basics leaves off. We will delve deeper into the essential skills and concepts and apply them to more complex projects. In the process, you will be introduced to new techniques and approaches that will enable you to take your Photoshop skills to a new level.


The Diary; pinhole photograph

The main topics for the class will include:

  • Adobe Camera Raw in-depth, including batch processing
  • Color and tonal correction in depth:  advanced techniques for “normal” and problem images
  • Selective color enhancement techniques to change, match and enhance colors
  • Selections and masking techniques
  • Understanding Blending Modes
  • Extend contrast range of camera or scanner with multiple exposures of a scene
  • Duotones and adjustment layers for split-toning techniques
  • Creating multi-image collages
  • Creating your own custom page templates

All example images used in the class will be provided. You can also bring a few of your own images to work with during the class as there may be time for you to work on images to practice the techniques covered.

* Participants are required to bring their own laptop computer that has a version of Photoshop on it. The class will be taught using Photoshop CS4 and CS3 so those versions are preferred. Photoshop CS2 may also be used but there may be features and techniques shown that are unavailable in CS2.



Who Should Take This Class / Prerequisites
This class is for photographers wh have taken Photoshop for Photographers: The Basics or have equivalent Photoshop skills and a good working knowledge of basic Photoshop procedures before taking this class. This is not a beginner class.

Seán Duggan is a photographer, author and educator with extensive digital imaging experience that is grounded in a traditional fine art photographic background. He is the co-author of The Creative Digital Darkroom (O’Reilly Media, 2007), Photoshop Artistry (New Riders 2006) and Real World Digital Photography (Peachpit Press 2004). An Adobe Certified Photoshop expert, his Photoshop for Photographers tutorial column can be seen regularly in Layers magazine. In addition to teaching online Photoshop for Photographers classes at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University he also provides consulting services, one-on-one training and leads workshops at venues across the country.
